tea and cookies
i tend to put off personal work all of the time because "i don't have a good idea for a painting." after another inspiring visit to joshua tree national park last weekend, i was suddenly struck by a so-obvious-it-sounds-dumb realization: personal work is painting anything that i like, even if it's just a cool cactus i saw in the desert. it doesn't need to have a background, or a story or any meaning at all other than being a response to seeing something beautiful. after having this ingenious new idea i made two small paintings in one day, and i resolve to make it more of a habit between client projects.

This was really helpful to read, right now. x

I'm glad to hear that, Jen. It's always comforting and less isolating for me to read that other artists struggle too sometimes. I should write more often about the emotional wringer that my relationship to my work regularly puts me through. Love, Y.
