the squatch pattern

squatch pattern
i created parts of this pattern when i was practicing for my red cap cards summer wrap project collection, combining the tiles in different ways, but it never looked right so i gave up on it. i'm such a novice at pattern-making (i definitely overthink it) but the red cap project compelled me to study successful patterns more closely and reflect on what makes them so pleasing to the eye. it's a lesson in proportion and even distribution of a limited color palette that i've yet to master, but after the project i decided to ditch the tiles and put the parts together in a simpler way, which already feels a bit less "off."squatch pattern detail

i started going to an aquacise class two mornings a week. the sense of accomplishment i have before noon gives me the momentum i need to get a lot of work done later in the day and i find that it really puts me in a good mood, too.  i like it so much that i had to express my feelings through a painting.

red cap cards: summer wrap project

red cap summer wrap 3 red cap summer wrap 2
i'm so excited! red cap cards' new summer wrap collection - featuring the work of seven red cap artists - debuted at NY NOW this weekend. the collection includes three gift wraps, two notebooks and three new greeting cards from each artist. this was such a great way to finally try my hand at patterns and i'm very proud of the way these products turned out:

a day in the life

my day
i lost track of which issue of flow magazine this appeared in, but it's just an illustrated little tour of what a typical day looked like when i lived in new haven. it hasn't changed much since the move, except now i also go to zumba and water aerobics a few times a week. (b. pointed out that it looks like i man-style pee in the bushes on my evening walk, but i assure you that was just meant to look like my hands are in the pockets of my cardigan.)

larger prints

unicorn print after so many requests over the years to start making larger prints, i have finally listened and now most of the prints in my shop are now available in 11 x 14 inches! i'm still updating listings with new information and product photos (these vignettes are so fun to compose), but i'm happy to answer any questions regarding sizing in the meantime.

a small painting (about 3.25 x 4.25") for the next enormous tiny art show in portsmouth, new hampshire. i always pick a theme and end up getting tired of it after the 3rd or 4th painting, but plod on, feeling like i have to stick to my self-imposed limitations. this time i'm going to paint whatever i feel like, restricted only by size and a need to harmonize with the frames that i already picked out.
