new copper foil cards

copper foil cards
the three new cards i designed for red cap cards' summer wrap project are now available in my shop! all three have accents of copper foil, which i think has such a beautiful effect in the light. two of the cards have matching notebooks, also with copper foil:

edward gorey envelope art contest

gorey envelope contest - front gorey envelope contest - back
every october, one of my favorite places in the whole world, the edward gorey house museum on cape cod, hosts a halloween envelope art contest. it used to be open only to children, but last year they added an 18+ category and i made sure to be ready this time. i'll be posting my entry later this week and keeping my fingers crossed!

halloween card for papyrus

 photo halloween-card_blog2_zpsekfvamu9.gif
happy october! temperatures dropped last week and my walks are getting longer as i try to savor the crisp autumn weather while it lasts. i illustrated this halloween card for papyrus a year ago and it's finally available in stores and online! the lenticular printing allows for the image to change when viewed from a different angle, so what at first appears to be a beautiful young woman is really a spooky, albeit still elegant, old witch. halloween card for papyrus

ETA 20 remaining pieces + news

remaining paintings
these two paintings are still available for sale at nahcotta gallery, as well as a few left over from previous shows, all ranging from $200 - $500 and including frames.

in other news, our new red cap cards summer wrap collection (including patterned notebooks stamped with gold and copper foil!!) launched at top drawer london yesterday, so if you're around, stop by to get your stationery fix at the studio curiosity booth. i haven't seen the stuff in person yet, but the photos that have been circulating are positively mouthwatering.

the squatch pattern

squatch pattern
i created parts of this pattern when i was practicing for my red cap cards summer wrap project collection, combining the tiles in different ways, but it never looked right so i gave up on it. i'm such a novice at pattern-making (i definitely overthink it) but the red cap project compelled me to study successful patterns more closely and reflect on what makes them so pleasing to the eye. it's a lesson in proportion and even distribution of a limited color palette that i've yet to master, but after the project i decided to ditch the tiles and put the parts together in a simpler way, which already feels a bit less "off."squatch pattern detail

i started going to an aquacise class two mornings a week. the sense of accomplishment i have before noon gives me the momentum i need to get a lot of work done later in the day and i find that it really puts me in a good mood, too.  i like it so much that i had to express my feelings through a painting.

red cap summer wrap 3 red cap summer wrap 2
i'm so excited! red cap cards' new summer wrap collection - featuring the work of seven red cap artists - debuted at NY NOW this weekend. the collection includes three gift wraps, two notebooks and three new greeting cards from each artist. this was such a great way to finally try my hand at patterns and i'm very proud of the way these products turned out:

a day in the life

my day
i lost track of which issue of flow magazine this appeared in, but it's just an illustrated little tour of what a typical day looked like when i lived in new haven. it hasn't changed much since the move, except now i also go to zumba and water aerobics a few times a week. (b. pointed out that it looks like i man-style pee in the bushes on my evening walk, but i assure you that was just meant to look like my hands are in the pockets of my cardigan.)

larger prints

unicorn print after so many requests over the years to start making larger prints, i have finally listened and now most of the prints in my shop are now available in 11 x 14 inches! i'm still updating listings with new information and product photos (these vignettes are so fun to compose), but i'm happy to answer any questions regarding sizing in the meantime.

a small painting (about 3.25 x 4.25") for the next enormous tiny art show in portsmouth, new hampshire. i always pick a theme and end up getting tired of it after the 3rd or 4th painting, but plod on, feeling like i have to stick to my self-imposed limitations. this time i'm going to paint whatever i feel like, restricted only by size and a need to harmonize with the frames that i already picked out.

this is the august page of a mini calendar which came with the dutch edition (1-2016) of flow magazine. i painted this in winter, when picnics on the grass were just a distant dream. now the dog days of summer are here, and i'm really trying to do right by my winter self, with cheese and wine and shakespeare in the park. i could really use a basket like that, too.

mem û zîn

earlier this year i illustrated a beautiful 17th century kurdish love story called "mem û zîn" for french children's magazine BAÏKA. i love the places my work takes me. i used any reference i could find on traditional dress and pulled the color scheme from a 19th century kurdish rug. i'm happy to finally share!

etsy wholesale
i recently illustrated these four postcards for etsy, inc. for their new direct mail campaign, which intends to connect museum gift shop curators with independent designers through etsy wholesale. i've been selling on etsy for years and it's so cool to have gotten the opportunity to collaborate with the company directly!

night walk, and an update

night walk
it's been almost four years since my absolutely random move to new haven, connecticut. uncertain about my decision at the time, i now thank my lucky stars for giving me the courage to say yes to the unknown. i found real magic in the much-scorned little town, and a really unexpected circle of friends, consisting entirely of graduate students from the yale school of architecture. even more unexpectedly, i found the kind of love that only comes along once in a lifetime, if ever. and together we are moving on to yet another secondary city (i have a real soft spot for them now): buffalo, new york. i'm still setting up my studio and getting adjusted to our new life, but i'm determined to find all of the magic i just know it has to offer.

unsichtbare freunde

imaginary friends imaginary friends these two illustrations are for the august 2016 issue of schweizer familie ("swiss family") magazine, for an article about childrens' imaginary friends. since the article is in german, the art director just briefed me with image descriptions: the first one is pretty straightforward, but the one with the little mice is a mysterious peek into someone's very intricate imaginary world!

spring cleaning my studio

my desk
"wabi-sabi is exactly about the delicate balance between the pleasure we get from things and the pleasure we get from freedom from things" (leonard koren, wabi-sabi for artists, designers, poets & philosophers)

i love to cull unnecessary things and eliminate clutter, and i get better with every round. but i also love pretty things. i'm spring cleaning my studio and the rest of my home, convinced that happiness lies in the sweet spot right between marie kondo and emily henderson. someday i will find it.
