I love Banana Yoshimoto's kitchen too :) Also Haruki Murakami is amazing! Have you read: Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World? It's one of my favorites.

kelly,
it's a good one! but my favorite of the magical realism novels has to be dance, dance, dance.

Norwegian Wood & I Capture the Castle have been read & loved - so I decided to trust your judgement and buy the rest off Amazon! They sound just my taste too, excited to get reading.

wow, holly, you're really putting trust in my taste! i'm flattered and hope the books don't disappoint. they're all very different from one another but i suppose the unifying theme is loss; ignorance is about the loss of country and language, the others - of love, of innocence, of direction. not the maurois, though - that's all about potential :)

alice,
that's interesting; a few people have commented on having some combination of these books in their list of favorites. any other authors you'd recommend based on this discovery?

I'm a huge fan of your illustrations (I got one of your prints for Christmas) and a librarian. I love the books I've read from your selection, so I'm going to give the rest a try. I like how eclectic it is.

I haven't read that one yet. I do love A Wild Sheep Chase though. :) I need to add these other books to my -read list.

Thank You!!! There is something about your art that makes me like what you appreciate so I went off and ordered the books on your list from the library (and I bought Norwegian Wood because I just couldn't wait.) I am so happy to be reading again after a long phase of non-fiction. I really like your taste.

Have you read Momo by Michael Ende? I just had to tell you about it.
