the rider

on friday i visited kelly murphy's sophomore illustration concepts class at the rhode island school of design to talk about some of my experiences as a full-time freelance illustrator so far. thanks to all of the students for your attentiveness, thoughtful questions and warm welcome. i had a wonderful evening, followed by a perfect saturday exploring the city of providence with b, with whom everything is always ten times better.

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket i was in israel the last two weeks (i know -  good timing, right?) i've been dreaming of returning since my first trip to this special place back in 2008. this time was a little less adventurous - no riding camels or climbing masada before sunrise - unless, of course, you count running through an abandoned lot behind a diamond factory in jerusalem with six barking strays at my heels (i shuddered at the sight of any dog for the remainder of the trip).

under constant threat of war, this little desert oasis seems to know how to enjoy life even in the most difficult of circumstances. thinking of friends and family; wishing peace and safety to all the people of israel and the rest of the middle east.

tomorrow magazine

if you've heard of the new, los angeles - based tomorrow magazine, you know it's kind of a big deal, and i feel lucky to play a small part in the very first issue. this illustration accompanies one click at a time: alcoholics are truly anonymous online, an article about the controversy of virtual support groups for people struggling with alcohol addiction. you can purchase the beautifully printed issue here.

three black princesses

for the exhibition the enchanted forest: celebrating 200 years of grimm's fairytales on view at foyles bookstore (113-119 charing cross road, london) november 29th - december 7th. "the three black princesses" is an obscure tale with a very unmemorable plot, but i couldn't pass up such a visual, especially at this spooky time of year.

the where, the why, and the how

the where, the why, and the how: 75 artists illustrate wondrous mysteries of science by julia rothman, matt lamothe and jenny volvovski is finally out! it's nice to share this after keeping it under wraps for over a year. i illustrated one of the most elegant examples of evolution - the peppered moth, which changed color over several generations in response to industrial pollution in london.

the book launch party will take place at 7pm on october 11th at powerhouse arena in brooklyn. i'll be signing books along with other featured artists, so please stop by if you are in new york next week (drinks will be served!)

home and away

between seeing the ancient towns of izborsk, pskov and novgorod, venturing north to finland (joensuu and helsinki) and finally seeing tallinn, i was really only in saint petersburg for about two full days.
all of these places are so lovely, so charming in vastly different ways. i'm still reflecting on and processing my impressions; there is a whole collection of photographs, drawings and herbariums still left to share.

from top left: 1) rest stop near joensuu 2) koli national park, finland 3) picking gooseberries at our country house 4) izborsk 5) pskov 6) novgorod

le temps des copains et de l'aventure

it's been a week since i've settled in my little corner of brooklyn. i can see the verrazano bridge from my window and gravesend bay is just a few blocks away, so the summer breeze occasionally brings a sea-salty smell. at night, those windows across the way light up just like in my drawings.

tomorrow morning i'm off to kentucky for b's wedding (yes, i can barely contain my happiness), and from there straight to ohio for two weeks. i have a weekend pass to the WMC fest, so if anyone happens to be in cleveland june 8-10, come say hello! (my pal tuesday bassen will be speaking at the festival on sunday) i'll pull most items from my shop until june 14th, but take along some postcard sets and elephants, just in case.

the wolves inside

wolves inside
"there are two wolves fighting inside you" - another full page and decorative border for the new issue of lone wolf. i believe this parable originally comes from cherokee legend, but here it's been re-imagined to fit the magazine's fairytale aesthetic. (here is a small interview!)

surprise feature on design*sponge this morning! i finally got the chance to thank grace bonney in person for putting me on the map two years ago - when i met her at the YCN opening last month, along with julia rothman, kate singleton, and many other lovely people.

so many thanks to all for supporting my move to new york - with your comments, emails, friendly offers to meet for coffee, and visits to my shop. i have quite a bit of work to finish up this week, but the good things that await at the end of may will feel that much more deserved.

(there's my "margarita," taking up 3.25 x 4.5 inches of prime real estate on page 122 of the communication arts illustration annual 53)

life is elsewhere

hanky panky
oh by the way, i'm moving to new york city in three weeks. i've always been one of those people who swear they would never do such a thing, but i'm also the sort of person who gives myself permission to change my mind. the london-based creative agency YCN has just opened a new york office - headed by tuesday bassen - and i'm going to be on its talent roster! last week, the new chapter officially launched with a private exhibition at a lovely ted baker ltd. store in new york's meatpacking district: "entitled a baker's dozen, the show presented the work of 13 YCN illustrators, each visualizing a quintessentially british expression" (mine was hanky panky, above). the show will be up and open to the public until may 23rd (here is the press release and some photos from the opening).
thanks for the warm welcome, new york!

natural history

i saw so many beautiful things today at the smithsonian institution's national museum of natural history in washington, dc. you should have seen that sea anemone sway! but the sparkling gems and minerals were my favorite (how can something so cold and lifeless have such a magnetic, all-knowing, mysterious aura?) the birds were okay, too.
