i came to your party dressed as a shadow

the halloween spirit doesn't creep up on me all on its own quite like it did when i was a kid, but i'm finding ways to feel its presence. it helps that this is the most beautiful autumn baltimore has had in years. last weekend we finally made it out to a pumpkin farm and yesterday i made paper bag lanterns to carry around at the upcoming "great big halloween parade of light and luminaria" in patterson park.

i walked about five miles north of the city today (just because) through unfamiliar streets where the houses are tidy and beautiful and all in one moment, the wind brought the smell of wet leaves and chimney smoke and the afternoon sun moved so perfectly through naked trees that i could have believed that i will never let silly life things upset me ever again. adieu to disappointment and spleen. what are men to rocks and mountains?
