jazz age fashion sketches
i am working on a series of fashion illustrations inspired by the work of ziegfeld photographer alfred cheney johnston. the clothes featured are by nina ricci, zac posen, christian dior, and others.

émile bernard
yesterday we saw the exhibition "gauguin: paris, 1889" at the cleveland museum of art, which featured works by gauguin as well as some of his contemporaries. almost every painting i was drawn to turned out to be by émile bernard. i am especially crazy about his color schemes, enough to make me want to do lots of studies. above, "madeleine au bois d'amour," (1888).

by the way, happy new year!
for new year's eve, i made glühwein, german hot mulled wine: pour a bottle of red wine (i used merlot) into a deep pan and keep on low heat for one hour; do not boil. add lemon peels, cinnamon sticks, cloves, bay leaves, honey, brandy, to taste. serve hot, imagine you are at the christmas market in köln, stomping around in the cold and cheerful winter night. warmest wishes for 2010!
