paper cult, part one

i am working on the window display for paper cult, a new paper and stationery boutique which will open sometime next week in tysons corner center in mclean, virginia. the main color is slate grey, with the fuchsia as an accent. i purchased about 40 large sheets of paper yesterday, and from now until sunday i will be cutting, gluing, and origami-ing.

murakami-inspired, in progress

i am working on something new, and being extra slow and careful because this is my first time working in a bigger size (8 in. by 10.5 inches) in such detail, and also putting one of my people into one of my environments (first time!) this has something to do with haruki murakami's "the wind-up bird and tuesday's women," and "the elephant vanishes."
i did a pencil drawing on bristol and went over the lines in a .005 black micron pen.

and now i taped off the edges and did a very thin wash of blue-grey watercolor. this is also new; i feel like this would eliminate the necessity of having to color in every object in the room, and also it would make the white border look nice when i pull off the masking tape.

one of my favorite poems is "letter" by lawrence raab. i feel far off, and cannot seem to be able to get anything done. (sketchbook)

guy of the month

dacha

drawings of summer homes outside of saint petersburg. our house is on the bottom row, second from the right (with open top window; i was inside there when i drew them). i later colored the houses on the left page, but stopped because i think i liked it better without color.

this kitchen was real once. then it only existed in my memory, far away in space and time. and now it is real again, still far but only in space. something has been lost.

i am back. in the middle of my three weeks, rather spontaneously, i also bought tickets for a sleeping car in a night train to moscow and spent a weekend there. (in moscow, not on the train.) a few drawings coming soon.

south of the border, west of the sun

shalom! i am back from israel, after ten days of traveling by bus through tel aviv, yaffo, haifa, tiberias, sakhnin, tzfat, and jerusalem. this was truly the best trip in my life. sketchbook pages coming soon.

hello arctic circle

on my mind this week: kolymá, the port city magadan, and the cold and lonesome vastness of the russian far east. although i am not entirely sure what he has to do with it, the rooster in a sweater says "goodbye."

ohio

figure drawing from my sketchbook, text is a passage from m. bulgakov's master and maragarita. i am in sunny (wind, green grass, dandelions) ohio, on my newly grandfather-fixed bicycle, with my summer music (listen!). it feels like an optimistic soviet film from the 1960s, the kind that can make anyone want to live in the ussr.
